IDC Middle East released a preliminary results on solid Drives shipment to the Middle east

Strong Notebook Demand Drives Solid PC Shipment Growth across the Middle East & Africa, According to the Latest Quarterly Data from IDC

Dubai, April 24, 2012
The Middle East and Africa (MEA) PC market experienced strong year-on-year growth of 13.5% during the first of quarter of 2012, with a total of 6 million PCs shipped into the region, according to preliminary results released last week by International Data Corporation (IDC), the premier global provider of market intelligence, advisory services, and events for the information technology, telecommunications, and consumer technology markets.

Once again, the market's expansion was driven by strong demand for notebooks, which saw an increase in shipments of 24.7% year on year to total 3.7 million units. Desktop shipments, on the other hand, experienced a decline of 1.0% year on year, with a total of 2.3 million units shipped during the first quarter of the year.
“Most parts of the region saw vendors becoming more aggressive, not only in terms of pricing, but also by offering better marketing support and reward programs to channels and resellers," says Fouad Charakla, a research manager at IDC Middle East, Africa, and Turkey. "Added to that, the absence of any more hard disk drive shortages eliminated any supply constraints in the market. IDC also saw a greater shift towards entry-level models of PCs in most parts of the region, primarily in relation to notebooks.”
Growing consumer demand in most key MEA countries, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and South Africa, positively impacted notebook shipments across the region. Despite the ongoing political instability in Egypt, IDC saw strong demand for notebooks from home users in the country. Turkey, on the other hand, experienced a slight decline in PC shipments year on year, as it was unable to match the stellar performance seen in Q1 2011. Meanwhile, a huge notebook deal delivered into Pakistan's education sector was among the highlights of the quarter in the region.
HP regained top spot in the MEA PC market on the back of strong year-on-year unit growth of 27.2%. The vendor ended Q4 2011 with many of its distributors across the region holding low levels of inventory, enabling it to ship aggressively during Q1 2012. The vendor also experienced some changes within its regional channel structure.
Despite increasing its shipments 15.6% year on year, Dell slipped to the second place in the MEA PC market of Q1 2012. Acer and Toshiba maintained their positions at numbers three and four respectively. Acer recorded a 15.5% year-on-year increase in volume, while notebook vendor Toshiba experienced strong growth of 39.4%. Samsung climbed to fifth place in the market, attaining the highest year-on-year growth rate among the top PC vendors in MEA region, at 72.3%.
